CINCINNATI - The Xavier women's basketball team fell short of a 13-point comeback and suffered a close 73-67 defeat at Cintas Center Saturday afternoon to Marquette.
The loss at home dropped XU's overall record to 7-9 (2-2 BIG EAST), while the Golden Eagles improved to 12-3 on the year (3-1 BIG EAST).
The Blue and White, who entered the contest ranked fourth in the conference in three-point field goals per game (6.5), hit 8-of-26 (30.8 percent) shots from behind the arc.
Senior Shatyra Hawkes (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) and sophomore Jenna Crittendon (Union, Ky/Ryle) led the Musketeers with 14 points each. Crittendon also added a game-high 10 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season. Sophomore Briana Glover (Mason, Ohio/Mason) finished with 13 points and three rebounds, while senior Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) had a strong second half to finish with 10 points.
Katherine Plouffe had a game-high 23 points and fell one rebound short of a double-double. Arlesia Morse scored 17 and knocked down the game-clinching three late in the second half. Brooklyn Pumroy finished with 14 points and five rebounds to round out the top scorers for Marquette.
Xavier jumped out to an early 11-4 advantage thanks to a 7-0 run, highlighted by Hawkes hitting the first three-pointer of the game with 12:57 left in the first half. MU fought its way back into the game and tied it up at 17-17 when Pumroy sunk a three with 8:06 left in the half. XU regained a lead when Crittendon put home a layup at the 5:31 mark, but that lead quickly faded when the Golden Eagles went on a 17-0 run and held the Musketeers scoreless for almost five minutes. The cold streak for the Blue and White ended when Glover hit an elbow jumper with 38 seconds left and Xavier went into the locker rooms down by 10 points, 38-28.
The Musketeers came out of halftime scoring two quick baskets, including a three-pointer from Wanninger, to get within five of the Golden Eagles. Marquette answered the run with seven points of its own and held a comfortable lead until Xavier got hot from the field in the final minutes of the half. The momentum in Cintas started shifting into the Blue and White's advantage when Crittendon knocked down two threes late in the game, one of them tying the game with 2:17 left, 65-65. Xavier was able to tie it again, 67-67, before Arlesia Morse hit a trey to give the Golden Eagles a three point lead and ultimately clinched the game. Marquette went on to knock down some late free-throws and pick up the 73-67 win.
The Musketeers will head to Omaha, Neb. on Wednesday (Jan. 15) to take on Creighton for the first time in program history. The game is set to tipoff at 8:05 p.m. ET.
