No. 16/14 Women's Hoops Muscles its Way to an 82-69 Victory Over Temple

CINCINNATI - Amber Harris and Tyeasha Moss each scored 20 points and Ta'Shia Phillips added 17 to lead the No. 16/14 Xavier University women's basketball team past Temple, 82-69, on Sunday afternoon at Cintas Center. With the win, the Musketeers improve to 11-3 on the year while Temple slips to 10-5. Sunday's contest was the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both squads.
With the win, XU improves to 7-8 in Atlantic 10 openers and 12-3 in A-10 home openers.
Moss' 20 came on 7-of-10 shooting, including an unconscious 5-for-5 from long range. Her previous career high was 15 points and she also recorded four steals on the afternoon.
Harris was a solid 9-of-17 from the field and hauled in 13 rebounds. The double-double was the 32nd of her career. Her stat-stuffing afternoon also included four assists, two blocks and three steals in 33 minutes of action.
Ta'Shia Phillips' 17 came on 8-of-14 shooting and she was one rebound shy of a double-double.
The contest was tight early and featured five lead changes. However, Xavier sprinted out to a 21-5 run over the final 6:45 of the first half to seize a commanding 46-28 advantage at the half. The run featured a pair of 3-pointers by Katie Rutan and six points from Harris. The Musketeers were never threatened for the remainder of the contest and extended their lead to as many as 24 points in the second half.
XU destroyed the Owls on the glass, outmuscling the Owls for a 44-to-28 advantage on the boards. Xavier also tied a season low by committing just 13 turnovers while dishing-out 18 assists.
The offense was firing on all cylinders on Sunday as XU shot 48.5 percent from the floor, including a sizzling 58.1 percent in the first half. Temple made its fair share of shots as well, connecting on 42.4 percent from the floor, and scorched the nets at a 68.4 percent rate from beyond the 3-point arc.
XU held its typical 34-to-18 edge in points in the paint and scored 25 second-chance points to Temple's nine. Kristen McCarthy led the way for Temple with 28 points.
The Musketeers are back in action on Saturday, January 16 when the team travels to Philadelphia to take on La Salle. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Tom Gola Arena.
