DAYTON, Ohio - Senior guard Suntana Granderson led all scorers with 18 points and classmate Joei Clyburn notched her second double-double in three games to lead the Xavier University women's basketball team past Dayton, 71-54, on Tuesday evening at UD Arena. With the win, Xavier improves to 12-4 on the season while the Flyers slip to 5-11. The contest was the A-10 opener for both squads.
The win marked XU's eighth in-a-row over UD and the Musketeers improved to 5-7 all-time in A-10 openers.
Freshman forward Amber Harris netted 15 points and pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds. Harris was 6-of-11 from the floor and also blocked four shots.
Clyburn ended the game with 17 points and 11 rebounds. She was 5-of-10 from the floor and a spotless 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
Senior guard Michele Miller had 10 rebounds and was one point shy of a double-double.
The Flyers opened up the second half with a bucket to cut XU's halftime lead to 33-32 but it was all Xavier after that. The Musketeers seized control of the contest with a decisive 27-4 run and took a commanding 61-36 lead after Harris converted on an old-fashioned 3-point play with 9:50 remaining in regulation.
Harris and Granderson sparked the run with nine and six points respectively and XU took advantage of six UD turnovers during the stretch.
The Musketeers took their largest lead of the game 61-36 with 9:31 to go and cruised to the 71-54 victory.
XU shot 39.7 percent from the floor but was a solid 51.5 percent from the field in the second half.
Xavier pummeled Dayton on glass by a 54-to-26 margin and held a decisive 20-to-4 on the offensive glass.
The first half featured six ties and seven lead changes and stayed close until Dayton mounted a 10-2 run over a five-minute stretch to take its largest lead of the half, 25-18, with 6:20 remaining in the first session.
Xavier had an answer though and sprinted out to an 8-0 run over the next 1:10. XU reclaimed the lead when Granderson drained her second 3-pointer of the half with 5:10 to go.
The Musketeers extended the 8-0 spurt to a 15-5 run and took a 33-30 lead into the locker room. Clyburn was outstanding in the first stanza as the senior recorded her second career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the first half.
XU will be back in action on Friday, January 12 when the team travels to Saint Louis to take on SLU. Game time is set for 8 p.m. EST.
