CINCINNATI - The Xavier women's basketball squad led by senior Ashley Wanninger's (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) career-high 26 points and a strong first half earned its second win in BIG EAST play defeating Georgetown Wednesday night at Cintas Center, 85-68.
XU improved to 7-8 on the year (2-1 BIG EAST), while Georgetown's lost its sixth straight game and fell to 6-9 overall (0-3 BIG EAST).
The Blue and White, who entered the contest ranked fourth in the conference in three-point field goals per game (6.3), hit 9-of-21 shots from behind the arc.
Wanninger scored a team-high and career-high 26 points and grabbed four rebounds to lead the Musketeers to their second BIG EAST win on the year. Sophomore Jenna Crittendon (Union, Ky./Ryle) finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Briana Glover (Mason, Ohio/Mason) went 4-of-6 from the field to score 11 points. Freshmen Kayla Davis (Brampton, Ontario/St. Marguerite d'Youville) and Maddison Blackwell (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln HS) each added 10 points to round out the top scorers for XU. Blackwell also grabbed a team-high six boards.
Andrea White had a team-high 16 points and six rebounds for the Hoyas. Natalie Butler, the BIG EAST leader in rebounds per game (12.7), finished with 20 boards and 14 points. Butler's performance marked the second time the freshman grabbed 20+ rebounds in a game (season-high is 21 against UAA).
Xavier could not have asked for a better first half. XU started off the half shooting 6-of-7 from beyond the three point arc. Wanninger finished the first half with 19 points, going 6-of-10 from the field and tying her career high for three-pointers made shooting 5-of-7 from three. The Musketeers used runs of 17-2 and 13-2 to grab an early 24-point lead over the Hoyas and score its highest point total in one half on the season with 48 (previous was 47 against Ohio on November 10). Georgetown answered late with a 9-0 run of its own, holding XU scoreless for the last 2:23 and going into the locker room down by 15 points, 48-33.
The second half was a closer contest for both teams (37-35 in favor of XU). Georgetown went on a 7-0 run and came within 10 of the Musketeers after Andrea White made two free throws for the Hoyas with 7:31 left in the game, but the consistent play of the Musketeers proved too much for the Hoyas and XU picked up another win as a new member of the BIG EAST.
Xavier will end its three-game BIG EAST home stand taking on Marquette Saturday (Jan. 11). The game is set to tipoff at 2:00 P.M.
