Men's Tennis Completes First Day of Dayton Invitational


FAIRBORN, Ohio - The Musketeer men's tennis team used Friday to position itself for the finals of the Dayton Invitational hosted by Wright State.

In doubles action, the team of senior Brad Meadors and junior Justin Yeager have advanced to the Championship Match of Flight One after defeating the team of Altenau/Khoury from Dayton in a tiebreak 9-8 (6) and Wright State's Gavin/Smith 9-7.

Also in Flight One, sophomore Rob Simpson and junior JR Randall will be playing in the seventh place match on Saturday after losing to teams from Morehead State and Wright State.

In Flight Two doubles, Xavier will have a pair of teams facing each other in the fifth place match as freshmen Jeremy Miller and Matt Zollman will face senior Kevin Gaughan and sophomore Rustin Reys on Saturday. Both teams lost their first round matches, but Miller/Zollman rebounded to defeat King/Van Deursen of Sinclair, 8-0 while Reys/Gaughan beat Orieux/Simola of Morehead State, 8-5.

Senior Cameron Bell and sophomore Kevin Trapp rounded out the doubles action for XU with a second place finish in Flight Three after a 1-8 loss to Hernandez/Smith of Morehead State.

Yeager dropped a three-set singles match to Dayton's Tom Murphy in the first round of Flight One, 6-1, 5-7, 6-10.

Randall also lost to a Flyer opponent in Flight Two singles, falling to Jonathan Khoury in straight sets 4-6, 5-7. Also in Flight Two, Simpson was playing Sean Barker of Sinclair when his match was suspended due to darkness. Simpson lost the first set, 6-7 but was leading the in the second 4-3.

In Flight Three, senior Ryan Potts and Zollman were each in the middle of their first round matches when play was halted due to darkness. Potts had won the first set, 6-4 over Alex Hernandez of Wright State and was tied in the second set 5-all. Zollman lost the opening set to Wright State's Kevin Teufel, 4-6, but was leading in the second 2-1.
