Musketeers Conclude Play at Eastern Illinois



Charleston, Ill. ? Freshman Brian Schubert claimed the individual title in flight B singles as the Xavier University men?s tennis team closed out play at the C. Roger Sorensen Tennis Invitational hosted by Eastern Illinois University. The Musketeers finished the two-day tournament with a 19-8 record in singles play and 7-2 in doubles.

In flight A, JR Randall was defeated 6-2, 6-1 in the finals by Charles LeVaque of Eastern Illinois. In the consolation bracket of flight A, Rob Simpson was 2-0 with wins over Ian Leonhardt (6-2, 6-4) and Carlos Gonzalez (6-3, 6-3).

Brian Schubert claimed the title in flight B with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of XU teammate and fellow freshman Brian Quinn.

On the doubles side, the teams of Rob Simpson/Justin Yeager and Jeremy Miller/Adam Shaeffer each posted a 3-0 record for Xavier. Simpson and Yeager cruised to an 8-1 win over Mas/Gehlhausen of IUPUI in the opening round. In the quarterfinals, Simpson and Yeager recorded an 8-4 defeat of Bush/Lenfert and won by an 8-3 margin over Nzudie/Filho in the semifinals.

Miller and Shaeffer put away Stuertz/Blankenbaker (8-3) in the opener, then posted an 8-3 defeat of Leonhardt/Gonzalez in the quarterfinals and concluded play with an 8-5 win over LeVague/Thomas.

The Musketeers will be back in action on Tuesday, October 5, as XU travels to Fort Wayne, Ind. for a match with the Mastodons of IPFW.
