CINCINNATI -- Former Xavier standouts Doug Matthews and Kara Courtney each had a great showing at the Thomas E. Price Cincinnati Metropolitan Tennis Tournament this weekend at Lunken Playfield. Matthews, who is an XU assistant coach, won his third straight men's doubles title with former Michigan State player John Allare. Matthews defeated the current XU duo of Jimmy Roebker and Brandon MacDonald 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in the finals to collect his 10th Met championship overall. In mixed doubles, Matthews teamed with Courtney to capture the title.
In the women's tournament former XU tennis student-athlete Kate Rippe teamed with Marie Matrka to win the women's double championship. Rippe played for Xavier for four years and was an assistant coach as well.
