Menís Tennis Earns No. 5 Seed
MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Xavier University men’s tennis team (11-11), under the direction of head coach Jim Brockhoff, departed Cincinnati on Wednesday morning in preparation for the 2004 Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Championship.
This year’s Championship which kicks off on Thursday morning, hosted by Duquesne University, will be played at the Oxford Athletic Club.
In voting among the Conference’s head coaches, Richmond earned the No. 1 overall seed while the Musketeers received the fifth seed.
Xavier will take to the court at 11 a.m. on Thursday for a rematch with fourth seed St. Bonaventure. In this year’s previous meeting, the Bonnies defeated the Musketeers, 6-1. Senior Ryan Potts earned the lone Xavier win at sixth singles with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Sajul Qureshi.
During the regular season, Xavier recorded a 3-1 record against Atlantic 10 opponents with wins over Dayton (4-3), George Washington (5-2), and Duquesne (7-0) with the lone defeat coming versus St. Bonaventure (7-0).
The Musketeers are looking to earn their first Atlantic 10 Championship since becoming a member during the 1995-96 season. XU finished fourth at last year’s Championship as St. Bonaventure claimed its second title with a win over Richmond.
