CINCINNATI - The Xavier men's tennis team was ranked 73rd in the nation by Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) marking the first time the program has been listed among the top 75 teams nationally since February 2010.
The Musketeers are 9-1 on the season and have won both of their Atlantic 10 matches heading into spring break matches that begin on Wednesday against Hawaii Pacific.
Xavier received a point total of 5.90 putting them ahead of Wichita State and South Florida in the standings released on Tuesday. It's the highest ranking ever achieved by a Musketeer team, besting the previous ranking of 74 set in the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship season.
Tuesday's ranking marks the second time Xavier has been recognized nationally by the ITA. Juniors Mesa Mei and Jimmy Roebker were ranked 55th in the nation as a doubles team to begin the spring season. The two have since recorded a perfect 6-0 record together but dropped out of the rankings.
Individually Mei and Roebker along with freshman Zach Mueck and senior Brandon MacDonald have given Xavier a formidable top four in singles action combining for a 36-3 mark. Doubles teams have fared equally well going 22-5 in 10 dual matches thus far.
The Musketeers begin play against the Sea Warriors at 9 a.m. HT on Wednesday. Xavier faces Hawaii on Thursday at 2 p.m. HT.
