CINCINNATI - Junior Mesa Mei and freshman Adam Krull of the Xavier men's tennis team turned in impressive performances last weekend that earned them the Atlantic 10 Co-Performer of the Week and Rookie Performer of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday.
Mei earned the award after posting a 3-0 singles and 2-0 doubles record last weekend for the Musketeers. Krull also had three singles wins and also earned a victory in his first doubles match of the season. Overall it is the second and third awards this year for the men's team.
Mei, a native of Somerville, Mass., has an 8-0 singles record and a 5-0 mark when playing with full-time partner Jimmy Roebker at the No. 1 doubles position for the Musketeers.
The junior started off the weekend with back-to-back straight-set victories over David Clifford of Morehead State and J.T. Closi of Western Kentucky. In his second match on Saturday Mei battled back after dropping his first set of the season to win in three sets against Pierce Kohls of Northern Kentucky.
His victory against Closi was his first appearance of the year at the No. 1 singles spot for Xavier. He has spent the remaining matches as the second singles player.
Mei and Roebker are the 55th-ranked doubles team in the nation and earned two 8-3 victories at the No. 1 position for the Musketeers.
Krull's three singles wins improved his winning streak to six matches for the Musketeers. The rookie defeated Morehead State's Nick Mercer (4-6, 6-2, 1-0(10-7)), battling back after dropping the first set, then posted straight set victories over Kento Okita of WKU (6-2, 6-4) and Jody Maginley of NKU (6-2, 6-1).
His first doubles match of the dual season was a dominant 8-0 decision with partner Michael Moe against Western Kentucky.
Earlier this spring freshman Zach Mueck was named the A-10 Rookie Performer of the Week.
Xavier has won seven-straight matches and has posted six-consecutive 7-0 victories in the stretch. The Musketeers open Atlantic 10 Conference play this upcoming weekend when they visit Duquesne on Friday. Last year Xavier went 5-0 in league dual matches.
