Jan. 26, 2013
CINCINNATI - The Xavier men's tennis team that has reached six consecutive Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Championship Finals has been selected to finish fourth in the conference by the league's 14 head coaches. The announcement was made Friday by the conference office.
The Musketeers have captured three league titles and automatic berths in the NCAA Tournament during those appearances and hope to reach the final at this year's A-10 Championship being held April 25-28 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
Xavier returns all but two players from last year's runner-up team including all-conference selections juniors Jimmy Roebker and Mesa Mei and senior Brandon MacDonald. The three combined for 59 singles victories, including a 17-1 record in conference play.
Also added to the mix are returners redshirt senior Patrick Bandy, senior Philip Diaz, and sophomores Michael Moe and Freddy Abunku. Playing in their first spring will be freshmen Matt Bishop, Zach Mueck, Adam Krull, Robert Torsch and Brian Carman.
League newcomer VCU was picked to claim its first league championship. George Washington, last year's title winner, received the second spot and Charlotte was picked to finish third. After Xavier the remaining top 10 teams were Richmond, Temple, Fordham, Duquesne, Saint Louis and Saint Joseph's.
