NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The top two teams from last season's Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Tournament title match were both picked to win the 2011 A-10 regular season crown by the conference coaches. Xavier and George Washington finished in a tie for first in the A-10 preseason poll.
Xavier, the defending A-10 Men's Tennis champion, edged George Washington, 4-3, in the Championship match last season, to earn its third consecutive Conference title and the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Musketeers, led by three-time Coach of the Year Eric Toth, return a pair of All-Conference second team selections in senior Bobby Deye and junior Richard Canelas. Deye, a two-time All-Conference pick, provided XU with its dramatic victory at the 2010 A-10 Championship, clinching a three-set win at number four singles.
George Washington, seeking its first A-10 Championship since 1979, returns a plethora of talent in four All-Conference selections, including seniors Erik Hannah, Chris Kushman and Yan Levinski, along with junior Ugur Atalay. Hannah, a two-time All-Conference honoree, closed out last season with an 18-11 singles record; while Kushman finished the 2010 season with a 25-9 overall singles record, including individual titles at the Georgetown Classic and the UVA Classic with victories over singles players from then-No. 1 Virginia and then-No. 40 Nebraska.
The 2011 A-10 Men's Tennis Championship will be held April 15-17 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Mo.
