Sept. 29, 2007
DAYTON, Ohio - The Xavier men's tennis team wrapped up play at the Wright State Invitational Saturday evening as junior Doug Matthews claimed first place in the A Flight singles bracket. Matthews defeated Wright State's Tony Teufel, 6-3, 6-4, in the A Flight finals. Junior Ra'ees Ismail defeated Dayton's Matt Sherman, 6-1, 6-2, in the finals of the A Flight consolation bracket.
"Overall, this was a successful weekend," said head coach Eric Toth. "I am extremely pleased with Doug Matthews' play. He was able to pull out a win in a tight match against Wright State's Camilleri and hopefully the other guys will be able to learn from his example."
In doubles action, the duo of Matthews and sophomore Chris Herrlinger took down Duquesne's Alex Mast and Jeremy McClelland, 8-3. XU's Ismail and sophomore J.T. Torbeck defeated DU's Micheal Ortega and Zach Skorupka, 8-3.
"I am happy with our team's physical condition," commented Toth. "To come out of two tournaments with everyone injury free is very positive."
