Strong Performance At Jack Vredevelt Invite Open Fall Schedule

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Xavier men's tennis team started off its 2012 fall schedule with a strong showing on the first day of the Jack Vredevelt Invite hosted by Western Michigan.

The Musketeers won seven singles matches and swept four doubles matches. Xavier faced Wisconsin-Green Bay in the majority of its singles matches and faced numerous schools in doubles play that started the day.

Junior Jimmy Roebker broke serve three times to win his first set and eventually won the match after Michael Tenzer retired with the score 3-2 in the second set. After winning the first set in quick fashion junior Mesa Mei had to battle to win the third set and the match.

Senior Brandon MacDonald downed Craig Cox (6-3, 6-4), sophomore Michael Moe defeated Michael Tebon (6-3, 6-1), and junior Philip Diaz won over Gary Notkin (6-3, 6-2). Freshman Adam Krull defeated Joey Leto (6-3, 6-0) and fellow rookie Zach Mueck captured a victory over Marius Merz (6-2, 6-2).

The Musketeers' Freddy Abunku and Patrick Bandy both lost their singles matches against Notre Dame players.

Xavier opened up the start of the tournament by sweeping four doubles matches. The combination of Roebker and Mei beat Illinois State's Alexander Pelaez and Erik Brunskog 8-6 at the number one slot.

Playing together for the first time was Bandy and Krull who beat out Muddappa Appenervanada and Michael Sellitto from Illinois State 8-3. Moe and Diaz won their match 8-3 against Jacob Wilson from Illinois State and Gary Notkin from Wisconsin-Green Bay.



Also winning their opening doubles match was Mueck and MacDonald. The two won the set 8-2 against the combination of Jorg van der Vloet and Jay Jones from Cleveland State. Freshman Brian Carmann joined forces with Notre Dame's Nicolas Montoya to beat Cleveland State's Nolan Marks and Matt Kuelker, 8-5.
