ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The No. 2 seeded Xavier men's tennis team got off to a good start at the 2011 Atlantic 10 tournament as the Musketeers defeated No. 7 seed Richmond 4-0 in the quarterfinals. With the win, the Musketeers improved to 14-9 on the season and will face the winner of Temple and Charlotte at approximately 2 p.m. in the semifinals on Saturday.
"A great start to this year's tournament," said Xavier head coach Eric Toth. "Richmond's guys competed well and really pushed us, especially in doubles. Brian Starr and Patrick Bandy really stepped up in a crucial situation to seal the doubles point. Whoever we play tomorrow it will be a most competitive semifinal. Our guys are looking forward to the challenge."
The Musketeers came out rolling with senior Bobby Deye and freshman Jimmy Roebker earning an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles over Jesse Feder and A.J. Nelson. Senior Starr and junior Bandy wrapped up the doubles point with an 8-6 win of their own at No. 1.
In singles action, the Musketeers continued to play well. Sophomore Brandon MacDonald defeated Nelson 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3. In the fourth singles slot freshman Mesa Mei posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Justin Baker.
Deye sealed the win for Xavier with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sebastian Fauchet.
The Musketeers will play in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 tournament Saturday at approximately 2 p.m. against the winner of No. 3 seed Temple and No. 6 seed Charlotte.
