Xavier Men Earn Senior Day Win
April 11, 2010
CINCINNATI -- The Xavier men's tennis team earned a senior day win in dramatic fashion as the Musketeers held off Duquesne for a 4-3 win. XU took the doubles point and rallied for three singles wins in the match.
"Another exciting, well-played conference match today," said Xavier head coach Eric Toth. "I am really proud of how guys hung in there and battled to get the win today. It was great for J.T. Torback to clinch the match for us on Senior Day. He, Chris Herrlinger, and Anthony Palmenter have been such a huge part of our success over the last several years and it was good for them and the rest of the team to come out a winner today."
In singles play, the Musketeers dropped the top three singles matches but managed to rally in the bottom three to earn the win.
Bobby Deye defeated Bryan Roberts and No. 4 singles. Torbeck rallied to defeat Mark Maciuch 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5, and at No. 6, Brandon MacDonald took down Kyle O'Leary.
With the win, XU improved to 7-1 in the Atlantic 10 and 14-7 overall. Xavier will begin A-10 tournament play Friday.
"All of our matches next weekend will probably be tightly contested right from the get-go, so it was good to pull out a match where there was pressure on every court and a lot on the line," said Toth. "Duquesne played well enough to win today. They will be a force to be reckoned with playing on their home courts at next week's A-10 tournament. It will be an outstanding tournament with eight pretty dangerous teams having a shot at winning the whole thing. I feel today's win certainly ends our regular season on a positive note and puts us in very good position for one of the top seeds at next weekend's A 10 tournament."
