April 2, 2009
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Playing outside for the first and only time this spring, the Xavier men's team dispatched of Northern Kentucky by a score of 9-0, using Division II scoring on the Norse home court. Moving up to the top flight of singles action for Thursday's meet, junior Chris Herrlinger won his match in straight sets.
"This was an overall good performance today," XU head coach Eric Toth said. "I thought our singles play was very good. We were outside for one of the few, if not the only, times this season and we adjusted very well. This solid performance will prepare us well for our upcoming meet with George Washington."
Rather than counting the doubles as one point, each match had a point at stake in paired competition. Senior Ra'ees Ismail and J.T. Torbeck played in the top flight of doubles, defeating Ignacio Ortiz and Fritz Dlabik of Northern Kentucky, 8-3. In the Flight 2 match, a pair of Musketeers sophomores in Bobby Deye and Brian Starr bested the Norse's Jason Kramer and Ricardo Weaver, 8-4, to give XU a 2-0 lead.
Herrlinger paired up with junior Anthony Palmenter as the Musketeers' Flight 3 duo, pushing the team's advantage to three points by winning the tiebreaker, 7-3, over Will Knoll and Tyler Fraser of NKU to claim the match, 9-8.
Once singles action began, the Musketeers continued their strong showing with a 6-0, 6-0 victory by Deye over Knoll in the Flight 4 match. Putting XU in front 5-0, Torbeck won his Flight 5 showdown with Fraser in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Freshman Richard Canelas claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win of his own, taking down Weaver in the Flight 3 match, extending the advantage to six points. Playing in the Flight 1 slot for the first time this season, Herrlinger stepped up with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Ortiz.
Completing the sweep for the Musketeers, Ismail won the Flight 2 match with Dlabik, 6-0, 6-4 and senior Mike Dieciuc wrapped up the day with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Kramer in the Flight 6 slot.
XU will return to action on Sunday, March 5 against Atlantic 10 Conference foe George Washington. The Musketeers' league finale will be played at Five Seasons and begin at 11 a.m.
