DALLAS, Texas -- The Xavier men's tennis team dropped a tough 4-2 decision to Abilene Christian Thursday afternoon and fell to Southern Methodist 5-2 afterward. With the loss, the Musketeers fell to 6-9 on the season.
"We put forth another strong effort, but came up a little short again," said XU head coach Eric Toth. "When we stop making mistakes at crucial times during the match things will start to get a lot better for us."
Bobby Deye scored one of the Musketeers' two points when he defeated Hans Hoch 6-2, 7-6 in the No. 1 position. Freshman Mesa Mei picked up the Musketeers' other point with a three-set (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) victory at No. 4.
Against SMU, the Musketeers swept all three double matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. However, the Mustangs managed to win crucial singles matches to take the win.
Junior Patrick Bandy and senior Brian Starr earned an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, Deye and freshman Jimmy Roebker posted an 8-4 win at No. 2, and Diaz and MacDonald posted their second doubles win of the day at No. 3.
In singles play Bandy posted a 7-6, 6-4 win over Joseph Hattrap at No. 5.
"Tonight was no question our best effort of the season. We played at a very high level tonight," said XU head coach Eric Toth. "We had match points in two of the singles matches we lost. That's how close we were to adding a great victory tonight. If we can keep this up over the last month of the season, we will awfully tough to handle in April. We need to get back into good practice routines in preparation for Atlantic 10 play next weekend."
XU returns to action Friday, March 18 as they travel to face Atlantic 10 foe St. Bonaventure.
