HONOLULU - The Xavier men's tennis team nine-match winning streak came to an end on Wednesday as the Musketeers, newly ranked as the 73rd team in the nation, dropped a 4-3 decision to Hawaii Pacific.
It was the first loss for the Musketeers (9-2) since their opening match against No. 4 Ohio State on Jan. 16. Additionally junior Mesa Mei lost for the first time in singles play this season and junior Jimmy Roebker and senior Brandon MacDonald also saw their streaks come to an end.
"Today was a disappointing result," head coach Eric Toth said. "We did not compete well enough in singles than was necessary and good teams will get you every time when you don't put in a complete effort for the duration of the match. Hopefully, we'll learn from this and be ready for Hawaii tomorrow."
Freshmen Zach Mueck and Adam Krull were the only two Musketeers to pick up singles victories on the day. Mueck cut down Geral Moretti (6-3, 6-3) at the No. 3 singles to give him his 10th win in a row and Krull posted an extended three-set victory (4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9)) over Adriano Locorrotondo at the five spot.
The Musketeers picked up the doubles point despite Mei and Roebker losing their first match of the season. Seniors Patrick Bandy and Philip Diaz won at the No. 2 doubles position and sophomore Michael Moe and Mueck won an extremely tight battle against Maxime Halflants and Locorotondo at the three spot.
Xavier returns to the court on Thursday when it faces Hawaii beginning at 2 p.m. HT.
