PITTSBURGH - The Xavier men's tennis team won their Atlantic 10 opening match and extended its winning to seven after defeating Duquesne, 7-0, at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness club on Friday afternoon.

The Musketeers move to 8-1 on the season and earn their seventh-consecutive sweep.

"Today was a super competitive match and the 7-0 win does not reflect that," head coach Eric Toth said. "Duquesne is a very solid team who will present a challenge to any team within the conference this season. Our guys were so tough under pressure today which was the main difference in today's match.

"It was really nice to see our guys respond when sets got close today. This is a great way to begin A-10 play and we hope to keep to keep it going next week against another tough conference opponent in Butler."

Three of the singles matches went three sets and Xavier had to bounce from losing the first point in each.

For the second-straight match Mesa Mei dropped his opening set only to rally from behind. The victory at No. 2 singles over Pete Carpenter makes the junior 9-0 in singles matches this year.

Also rallying from behind was freshman Zack Mueck and sophomore Michael Moe. Mueck defeated Corey Robinson and the third singles spot and Moe downed Max Rubin at the No. 5 singles spot.

Other wins came from junior Jimmy Roebker at the No. 1 spot, freshman Adam Krull at the fourth spot and sophomore Freddy Abunku at the six position.

The Musketeers won at the No. 1 and 2 doubles positions to star the match. Mei and Roebker moved to 6-0 as a pair with their 8-2 victory over Aleman and Carpenter. Seniors Patrick Bandy and Phil Diaz picked up a very tight 9-8 (10-4) decision against Robinson and Rubin. Moe and Mueck lost their doubles match.

Xavier will face Butler on Wednesday in the team's second Atlantic 10 match of the season. Play begins at 1 p.m. at the Mercy HealthPlex in Fairfield.
