CINCINNATI - The Xavier University men's tennis team recorded its second-straight victory and seventh win overall as the Musketeers defeated Northern Kentucky, 7-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the Mercy HealthPlex at Fairfield. XU was perfect on the afternoon with a sweep of the doubles and singles matches.
XU picked up the first point of the match with wins in the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Doug Matthews and Rob Simpson moved to 7-7 on the season with an 8-4 defeat of Fritz Dlabik and Fileppi Rosetti. Ra'ees Ismail and Rustin Reys moved up to the second position where they blanked NKU's Michael Volkov and Jason Kramer, 8-0. At No. 3, Brian Quinn and Brian Schubert teamed for an 8-3 win over Kurt Collins and Josh Fudula.
In singles action, the Musketeers recorded straight-set wins in five of the six matches versus the Norse. At No. 1, junior Jeremy Miller picked up a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Dlabik. Senior Oliver Marinkovic did not drop a game to Volkov at No. 2 en route to his 6-0, 6-0 win. At No. 3, Matthews moved to 12-9 on the season with a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (3) defeat of Rossetti.
Freshman Ra'ees Ismail improved to 14-6 on the season with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kramer at No. 4. At No. 5, Simpson recorded his 12th win of the season with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Collins. Shaeffer finished up the XU singles sweep at No. 6 where he defeated Fudula, 6-0, 6-1.
XU will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 21 when the Musketeers play host to Atlantic 10 Conference rival Dayton. First serve is slated for 1:00 p.m. at the Mercy HealthPlex at Fairfield.
