CINCINNATI - The Xavier men's tennis team picked up two victories on Saturday defeating both Western Kentucky and Northern Kentucky, 7-0, to improve the team's winning streak to seven matches.
The Musketeers (7-1) used a variety of lineup combinations on Saturday to earn the wins over the Hilltoppers (1-2) and Norse (1-4). Xavier has swept its last six matches.
"Today was a good test for our team. We played a lot of tennis this weekend and I think it will pay off for us in the long run," said assistant coach Doug Matthews. "NKU definitely challenged us tonight and we responded well. I'm sure the guys will enjoy their well-deserved day off tomorrow."
Xavier started off the day with the win over Western Kentucky at the Western Tennis & Fitness Center. Junior Mesa Mei stepped into the No. 1 singles spot and earned his eighth victory of the year. Also bumping up one playing spot was freshman Zach Mueck who took a straight-set decision. Senior Brandon MacDonald and freshman Adam Krull also earned wins.
Bandy paired with senior Philip Diaz to lead the Musketeers to the doubles point to start the match. Krull combined with sophomore Michael Moe for the first time this season to win at No. 2 doubles and freshman Brian Carman saw his first action of the spring as he teamed with junior Jimmy Roebker for a win at No. 3 doubles.
The Musketeers had a tougher time dealing with the Norse but eventually were victorious in a match played at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Center.
Roebker returned to his No. 1 singles position for a sixth-straight win and Mei battled off his opponent in three sets. Mueck, MacDonald and Krull also nailed down wins and Moe stepped into the No. 6 singles position to take his third-straight solo win.
In doubles action Xavier earned wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions to continue its dominance in paired play. Roebker and Mei improved to a perfect 5-0 as the No. 55th-ranked doubles pair in the country. Mueck and Moe secured the point with their fourth-straight win.
The Musketeers have off until Friday when they travel to Pittsburgh to face Duquesne in their opening Atlantic 10 match of the season.
