PHILADELPHIA – Xavier freshman Brandon MacDonald earned a dominating win at No. 5 singles as the XU men’s tennis team earned its first Atlantic 10 Conference win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Saint Joseph’s Friday.
MacDonald defeated Lucho Perez-Abreu 6-0, 6-0 to earn his fourth singles win of the dual match season.
"It was nice to get our first Atlantic 10 win. St. Joseph's played up pretty tough I thought and they made us earn all of our victories for the most part,” said XU head coach Eric Toth. “Temple will provide a very big test for us on Sunday. They are talented and will be as competitive as anybody in the A 10. We will have to compete at our best to earn a victory and I expect our guys will be ready to go."
Xavier’s only loss of the night came in the No. 2 singles match as Richard Canelas fell to Alex Veronis 6-4, 7-6. Senior Chris Herrlinger earned a tough 6-2 2-6 6-2 win in the No. 1 singles match, Patrick Bandy improved to 3-3 in singles matches in 2010 with a win at No. 3 singles, and JT Torbeck and Brian Starr rounded out the XU singles wins. The Musketeers also swept the doubles matches on the day.
XU improved to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in the A-10. The Musketeers will remain in Philadelphia to face Temple on Sunday.
