CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Xavier men’s tennis team captured its second straight victory as the Musketeers defeated Cleveland State 5-2 Saturday in Cleveland, Ohio. XU captured the doubles point and four crucial singles victories to seal the win.
"I am really proud of our guys today. A great team win,” said Xavier head coach Eric Toth. “Cleveland St. has had our number for the last several years and it is nice to finally beat them. What is most impressive is that this may be the best team Cleveland St. has fielded in recent memory and they have had some quality teams. All you have to do is look at the match scores to see how today's match could have gone either way.”
The Xavier seniors’ solid performances helped seal the win for the Musketeers. Senior Chris Herrlinger defeated Phil Orno 6-7 (2) 6-3 6-4 in the No. 1 match. JT Torbeck defeated Rob Fox 7-5 1-6 7-6 (8) in the No. 3 singles match and Anthony Palmenter teamed with Brian Starr for a hard-fought doubles win.
“Our seniors were our MVP's today,” said Toth. “All three of them pulled out matches in the clutch. Brian Starr and Brandon MacDonald were also really impressive today. This team is really playing with a lot of confidence right now and it is really great to see them beat a really good team today. We'll look to keep it going tomorrow against Youngstown St."
With the win the Musketeers improve to 2-2 on the season. XU will look to extend the win streak to three matches as they travel to Youngstown State on Sunday.
