MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Xavier men's tennis team came up short at Ball State Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals topped the Musketeers 5-2. With the loss, the Musketeers fell to 0-3 on the season while BSU improved to 3-1.
"Our team competed extremely hard today," said XU assistant coach Doug Matthews. "Ball State has a very good team with a long history of success. If we can compete like we did today from here on out there is no question that we will improve as a team. I look forward to our matches against Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State next weekend."
Sophomore Brandon MacDonald picked up one of Xavier's two singles wins as he bested Alex Brym 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the No. 3 match. Junior Patrick Bandy earned the Musketeers' other singles win with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win over Shaun Bussert in the No. 5 match.
In singles play, the Musketeer duo of freshman Jimmy Roebker and MacDonald defeated Brym and Bussert 8-4 in the third match.
The Musketeers will hit the road again next weekend as they face Morehead State on Friday, February 4 and Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, February 5. Both matches will be held in Richmond, Ky.
