COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Xavier men's tennis team faced its toughest competition of the young season Wednesday as the Musketeers fell 6-1 to 18th-ranked Ohio State at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center on the OSU campus. XU falls to 2-1 with the loss while the Buckeyes improve to 2-0 on the year.
Ohio State took a 1-0 lead in the match as the Buckeyes swept the three doubles matches. At No. 1, XU's Doug Matthews and Rob Simpson were defeated 8-3 by Drew Eberly and Stephen Moneke. In the second position, OSU's Chris Klingemann and Devin Mullings posted an 8-2 defeat of Xavier's Oliver Marinkovic and Jeremy Miller. At No. 3, Ra'ees Ismail and Rustin Reys dropped an 8-5 decision to Dominic Ozanne and Scott Green.
In singles action, Simpson recorded XU's lone win of the match as the co-captain posted a 6-2, 5-7, 10-6 win over Ty Schaub at No. 5. Marinkovic forced a first set tiebreaker at No. 1 with Moneke before falling 7-6 (3), 6-4. At No. 2, Miller was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Mullings.
At No. 3, Matthews dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Dennis Mertens. In the fourth position, Ra'ees Ismail fell in straight sets to Eberly, 6-3, 6-0. At No. 6, sophomore Brian Schubert battled for two sets with Ohio State's Todd Wojitkowski, but the OSU senior held off Schubert for a 6-4, 7-5 win.
Xavier will return to action Saturday, Jan. 28, when the Musketeers will travel to Cleveland to take on the Vikings of Cleveland State University.
