COLUMBUS, Ohio - Junior Mesa Mei won his singles match for the Xavier men's tennis team who dropped a 6-1 decision to fourth-ranked Ohio State at the Varsity Tennis Center on Wednesday to open its 2013 season.

Mei picked up his victory (6-4, 6-2) for Xavier (0-1) at the number two singles spot over the Buckeyes (1-0) Ille Van Engelen. The victory improves the junior's all-time singles record to 62-29.

"Although we fell short everybody did an outstanding job competing the entire night," head coach Eric Toth said. "Ohio State always makes it very difficult on you, but I felt our guys battled them court for court about as well as any team I've ever brought up here.

"If you we can put out this type of effort every time we take to the court and play to our ability we will be really successful this year. We will need this same type of effort and performance to beat a very good Cleveland State team on Friday."

In three singles matches Xavier faced nationally-ranked opponents and lost each decision. Junior Jimmy Roebker had the hardest challenge facing the nation's top-ranked player Peter Koblet. Roebker, playing at the number one singles slot, lost in straight sets (7-5, 6-3).

Also losing to ranked opponents were senior Brandon MacDonald and freshman Adam Krull. MacDonald dropped his decision (6-3, 6-2) to No. 30 Chris Diaz at the fourth singles spot and Krull was defeated (6-2, 6-2) by No. 13 Connor Smith at the five spot.

Xavier's other singles players were freshman Zach Mueck who lost (6-3, 6-3) to Devin McCarthy at No. 3 singles and sophomore Michael Moe who fell (6-2, 6-4) to Constantin Christ in No. 6 singles play.

The Musketeers battled in two of their three doubles matches but eventually dropped the point to the Buckeyes. Redshirt senior Patrick Bandy and Roebker held a brief lead in their number one doubles match but eventually fell to Kobelt and Smith, 8-5.Senior Philip Diaz and Mei also kept close to Van Engelen and McCarthy but lost the match, 8-4.
