Men's Tennis Falls to Florida Atlantic, 5-2, in Dual Meet Opener
Jan. 9, 2009
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Despite winning the doubles point, the Xavier University men’s tennis team fell to Florida Atlantic, 5-2, in the Musketeers’ dual meet opener. XU won two of three doubles matches, but only freshman Richard Canelas was able to claim victory in singles action in the loss.
“We’re certainly disappointed with today’s outcome,” head coach Eric Toth said. “We came down here to work hard and start a good foundation for this year, but we also came here to get a win. Give Florida Atlantic a lot of credit. They came back after losing a tough doubles point and played great in singles.
“I am really proud of how our guys played today. This is no doubt going to help us as we get into the teeth of our schedule,” Toth said.
Senior Ra'ees Ismail and J.T. Torbeck helped get the Musketeers into the meet with an 8-3 victory in the No. 2 doubles match. Sophomore Bobby Deye, playing in his first match with XU, paired with fellow sophomore Brian Starr to defeat Lawrence Harradine and Santiago Nieto of Florida Atlantic in dramatic fashion, 9-8 (5), in the No. 3 doubles competition.
Although the Musketeers pushed three of the six matches to three sets in singles action, only Canelas was able to come out on top. After losing the first set 6-4, Canelas rebounded to take the next two from Eddie Majcher for the win in the No. 5 slot.
Deye jumped out an early lead in his singles match, winning the first set 6-1, but dropped the next two in his Musketeer debut. Senior Mike Dieciuc was dealt a similar fate, winning his first 6-4 before dropping two straight.
One of the top programs in college tennis awaits the Musketeers on Jan. 21 when XU travels to Columbus, Ohio to take on Ohio State.
