CINCINNATI - Xavier men's soccer forward Luke Spencer was designated by Major League Soccer as one of 54 NCAA Division I college seniors invited to participate in the 2013 adidas MLS Player Combine.
This year's adidas MLS Player Combine will again be held at Central Broward Regional Park in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., prior to the SuperDraft.
"This is an exciting and well deserved honor for Luke," head coach Andy Fleming said. "Allowing our players to pursue and achieve their professional soccer dreams is now something that is part of our program's evolution. Hopefully this is the start of an exciting journey for Luke and I want to congratulate him, his family, our coaching staff and the entire program on our first ever MLS Combine invite. Luke will be waving the Xavier flag and I truly feel that his skill set as a combination post and face up striker is unique and will be in demand."
Spencer had a career-year for the Musketeers who reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament and lost to eventual national champion Indiana. The Cincinnati native scored 14 goals to lead the Atlantic 10 and had eight assists. He was named to the Atlantic 10 First Team and NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic First Team this year.
The 6-2 forward was the lone striker during the final three years of his career. He finished his career with 29 goals and 21 assists with both totals ranking in the top five of Xavier's annals.
Spencer and the other invited players will be divided into four separate teams that are led by prominent collegiate coaches and select youth coaches. Matches will be played as doubleheaders on January 11, 13 and 15. Each match is closely monitored by technical staff from all 19 MLS clubs.
Tickets will be available to the public for $10 on the day of the games at the Central Broward Regional Park box office and include admission to both matches that day.
For the ninth-consecutive year, the MLS SuperDraft will be held in conjunction with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Convention, and take place on Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Indiana Convention Center, in Indianapolis, Ind. The SuperDraft will begin at 12 p.m. ET where all invited players will be eligible for selection.
The 2013 MLS SuperDraft will include two rounds and 38 overall selections. The first nine selections are currently held by clubs that did not qualify for the 2012 MLS Cup Playoffs, in reverse order of regular season finish. The remaining 10 positions currently belong to clubs that were eliminated in the same round of the 2012 MLS Cup Playoffs, in reverse order of regular season finish.
A four-round Supplemental Draft will take place via conference call on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013.
