Dec. 2, 2011
CINCINNATI - Junior defender Sean Ryanwas named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Second Team on Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), adding to an already lengthy list of academic and on field accolades won this season.
Earning the award makes Ryan the program's first Capital One Academic All-American since Jim Sandmann received a Third Team honor in 1983.
Ryan, an outside back for the nationally-ranked Xavier men's soccer program, sports an impressive 3.92 GPA and will graduate in May with majors in both economics and finance.
This award is the third academic award of the year for the Hilliard, Ohio native who was earlier named to his first Capital One Academic All-District IV First Team and received his second straight Atlantic 10 All-Academic team honor. In addition he has been named to six consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Rolls.
He has started 57 of 58 games in his three years for the Musketeers and has been nearly impossible to get off the pitch. In those games he averages 88.9 minutes or 94.3 percent of all minutes. In total he's played over 5,000 minutes.
College Soccer News recognized his defensive prowess and leadership by naming him one of their Team Linchpins, an award that recognizes non-statistical contributions. He has one-career goal and three-career assists and has led his defense to 18 shutouts in the last two years.
Ryan again helped Xavier win the Atlantic 10 Championship and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament. He was also part of the record breaking defense that set a new single-season record for goals allowed (19). The Musketeers' defense is also ranked 29th nationally in goals against average (0.85), which is also another school record.
