Musketeers Beat Butler, Sweep Opening A-10 Weekend
The No. 17/14 Xavier men's soccer team finished the first weekend of its Atlantic 10 Conference schedule with a solid 2-1 victory over visiting Butler on Sunday afternoon at the Xavier University Soccer Complex. The Musketeers (9-0-2) received scores from sophomore Andrew Jordan and senior James Queree.

With the win, the Musketeers improved to 10-5-2 overall (6-2-0 BIG EAST), while the Wildcats fell to 8-9-1 overall and 3-5-0 in BIG EAST play. The win also gave XU their fourth consecutive 10+ win season and kept the Blue and White in the chase for the league title as well as a first round bye as one of the top two finishers.

Nova scrambled fiercely to try to get the equalizer, but the Blue and White effectively defended the last of VU's four corner kicks on the day and ran out the clock.

Villanova finished with a 14-6 advantage in shot attempts, while Xavier had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Xavier goalkeeper Eric Osswald (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty/USF) picked up his 10th win and sixth shutout of the season, while registering seven saves in 90 minutes between the pipes.

On the year, the Musketeers have netted 24 goals, allowing 16 scores with a 0.94 goals-against average. XU has been led offensively this season with eight goals from senior Matt Walker and five from redshirt junior Will Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia). Matt Walker also leads the team with seven assists on the year. Between the pipes, senior Eric Osswald has racked up 60 saves and six shutouts in 16 games.

Butler has dropped four of their last five matches. The Bulldogs have also surrendered 11 goals during that stretch. Meanwhile, in their last five outings, the Musketeers have won five straight, scoring 10 goals and allowing only three.

Through games played on Nov. 3, Matt Walker ranked 24th in the nation and 3rd place in the BIG EAST in assists per game (0.47), while also ranking 22nd nationally and No. 3 in the conference in total assists (7). He also ranks 17th nationally and No. 1 in the conference in points per game (1.53).

• Xavier is seeking its first BIG EAST Conference title heading into the final match of the 2013 regular season Friday at Butler.

• A Musketeer win and a Marquette loss at DePaul would give XU the BIG EAST Regular Season title and the No. 1 overall seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship

• With 18 points in the league, the Blue and White currently sit in second place in the BIG EAST standings trailing first-place Marquette by one point and owning a two-point lead over third-place Georgetown heading into Friday's final regular-season match.

• The worst XU could finish is third place, which means the Musketeers would host one of two BIG EAST quarterfinal matches on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The top two teams receive a bye to the BIG EAST semifinals next Friday, Nov. 15 at PPL Park in Chester, Pa., which is also the site of the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 17.
