Nick Hagglund was named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday.

CINCINNATI - For the first time in program history the Xavier men's soccer team placed three members on the Atlantic 10 Conference First Team, including junior Nick Hagglund who was named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year.
Also named to the first team was senior Luke Spencer and junior Matt Walker. Earning a spot on the A-10 Second Team was sophomore Will Walker and Senior Sean Ryan was selected to his third-straight A-10 All-Academic Team.
The four players selected to the two the first and second teams are the most since Xavier had four in 1998.
Hagglund, known for his outstanding ability to defend and wins headers, becomes the first Xavier player to earn a league defensive player of the year award. The Cincinnati native is the second three-time A-10 selection and third two-time first team selection in program history.
The honor adds to the list of awards Hagglund has already racked up this season. He was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and was a two-time preseason All-American selection. Last year Hagglund was a NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic First Team Selection in addition to his A-10 First Team selection.
Spencer has been the guiding force for the Xavier offense that is ranked third in the nation heading into postseason play. The Cincinnati native leads the Musketeers with 13 goals and six assists. He finished the season tied for the league lead in goals and points. He was named the A-10 Player of the Week twice this year and is the reigning TopDrawerSoccer.com Men's College Player of the Week.
Matt Walker's first conference award came on the heels of a career-high nine goals and nine assists. The midfielder from Batavia, Ohio came on strong down the stretch scoring five goals in the final four matches. He finished fourth in points and tied for third in assists in the league and scored five goals and handed out four assists during conference play.
His twin brother Will Walker had seven goals and five assists earning him his second-straight Atlantic 10 team selection. He had seven points in the final three games for the Musketeers and finished the conference season second in total goals and fourth in points per game. Last year the sophomore was an all-rookie team selection
For the third-straight season Ryan repeated as an A-10 All-Academic Team selection. The senior was named to his second-straight Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District last week and was a CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-American.
The third-seed Musketeers begin their quest to win third-straight Atlantic 10 Championship when they play six-seed Dayton in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at 2 p.m. on Thursday. The match will be streamed live on Atlantic10.com.
