Men's Soccer Falls 4-2 to George Washington

Junior Ty Helmle, whose natural position is in net, scored the first goal of his career late in the second period but it was not enough as the Xavier University men’s soccer team dropped a 4-2 decision to George Washington on Friday evening in our nation’s capital. With the loss, XU slips to 4-10-1 overall and 2-4-1 in Atlantic 10 play. GW improves to 3-8-3 on the year and 2-3-2 in the loop.

Helmle’s goal brought the Musketeers within one score, 3-2, at the 82:30 mark but GW forward Frank Ambrosio took a feed from Andre Chapman and netted the game’s final score at 89:16 to put the game out of reach.

GW scored two early goals, both by Chapman, at 11:03 and 13:47 to take a 2-0 lead it would not relinquish. Junior Chris Wolever got XU on the board 15 minutes into the second half, but the Colonials’ Trevor Martin countered with a goal at 64:11 to give GW a 3-1 lead.

The game was evenly matched, as the Colonials out-shot the Musketeers by a 16-to-15 margin and held a slim 7-to-6 edge in shots on goal.

Brian Schaeper stopped six shots in net for Xavier and Derek Bliss turned away seven shots for GW.

Xavier ends its four game road trip with a contest at A-10 foe Richmond on Sunday, October 24. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
