Game No. 14: Xavier (6-5-2, 2-2-0 BIG EAST) vs. St. John’s (7-5-1, 0-3-1 BIG EAST)
With the win, the Musketeers handed the nationally ranked Hoyas (9-3-1, 2-1-1 BIG EAST), who lost in the 2012 College Cup Championship game, their first conference loss of the season. The victory gave XU it’s first home BIG EAST win and the first win over a ranked opponent this season.
The Hoyas struck first in the 31st minute, when Brandon Allen beat three XU defenders to the ball and knocked a shot into the lower right corner of the goal for his eighth tally of the season.
About 14 minutes later and 51 seconds before the intermission (44:09), the Blue and White got on the scoreboard when junior Garrett Halfhill (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) sent a long pass to Will Walker, who out ran the G’Town defense and one-touched the ball past the diving GU keeper.
The two teams played even until the 74th minute when sophomore Calum Latham (Springfield, Ohio/Central Catholic) and senior Matt Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) teamed up to find Will Walker for the game-winner and his second score of the night.
Xavier goalkeeper Eric Osswald (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty/USF) picked up his sixth win of the season and registered four saves in 90 minutes between the pipes.
Xavier out shot GU 13-7, but the Hoyas won the corner kick battle (4-3) and the teams both finished with five shots on goal. Georgetown, who only surrendered five total goals prior to Saturday night’s game (12 games), surrendered muti-goals in a contest for just the second time this season.
