Redshirt junior Will Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) found the back of the net twice to lead the Xavier men’s soccer team to the program’s first home BIG EAST victory with a 2-1 decision over the No. 4/9 Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday night at the XU Soccer Complex.

With the win, the Musketeers handed the nationally ranked Hoyas (9-3-1, 2-1-1 BIG EAST), who lost in the 2012 College Cup Championship game, their first conference loss of the season. The victory gave XU it’s first home BIG EAST win and the first win over a ranked opponent this season.

The Hoyas struck first in the 31st minute, when Brandon Allen beat three XU defenders to the ball and knocked a shot into the lower right corner of the goal for his eighth tally of the season.

About 14 minutes later and 51 seconds before the intermission (44:09), the Blue and White got on the scoreboard when junior Garrett Halfhill (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) sent a long pass to Will Walker, who out ran the G’Town defense and one-touched the ball past the diving GU keeper.

The two teams played even until the 74th minute when sophomore Calum Latham (Springfield, Ohio/Central Catholic) and senior Matt Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) teamed up to find Will Walker for the game-winner and his second score of the night.

Xavier goalkeeper Eric Osswald (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty/USF) picked up his sixth win of the season and registered four saves in 90 minutes between the pipes.

Xavier out shot GU 13-7, but the Hoyas won the corner kick battle (4-3) and the teams both finished with five shots on goal. Georgetown, who only surrendered five total goals prior to Saturday night’s game (12 games), surrendered muti-goals in a contest for just the second time this season.

On the year, the Blue and White have netted 16 goals, allowing 14 scores with a 1.08 goals-against average. XU has been led offensively this season with four goals and six assists from senior Matt Walker. Will Walker and Jalen Brown are second and third on the team in goals scored, respectively. Between the pipes, XU has used a pair of keepers, with Eric Osswald racking up 43 saves, which rank fifth in the conference, and four shutouts in 12 games and Vince Shaw (Versailles, Ky./Woodford County) tallying four saves in three of appearances.

- St. John's is 7-1-0 at Belson Stadium this season and has posted a 43-8-9 (.792) record at home since 2008, including a 16-4-4 (.750) mark in BIG EAST play.

- The Red Storm is 37-1-1 (.962) when scoring first since the 2010 season, including a 6-0-1 record this year. Prior to the 2-2 draw against DePaul, the Red Storm had won 20-straight games when scoring first dating back to Oct. 12, 2011.

- Sean Sepe now ranks tied for fourth in the league with six goals, tied for third with three game-winners and eighth with 13 points.

- Rafael Diaz ranks third in the league in both goals against average (0.88) and shutouts (5), and fourth in save percentage (.793).

- With 28 shutouts in his career, Diaz ranks third in the all-time St. John's record books and trails only Bill Gaudette (30) and Jason Landers (29).

After facing St. John’s on the road, the Musketeers will return home to host the final two home matches of the 2013 season (Oct. 23 vs. Seton Hall, Oct. 26 vs. Providence).

Through games played on Oct. 17, Matt Walker ranked 13th in the nation and No. 1 in the BIG EAST in assists per game (0.55), while also ranking 15th nationally and No. 2 in the conference in total assists (6).

A trio of Xavier University men's soccer players earned weekly awards after helping lead the Musketeers to an undefeated week (2-0) last week. Eric Osswald and Jalen Brown were named BIG EAST Goalkeeper and Rookie of the Week, respectively, while Will Walker earned a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll and was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.

Last week was huge for the Blue and White, as they picked up the program's first BIG EAST victories (home and road) and also knocked off a nationally-ranked team in the Hoyas of Georgetown.
