Xavier Nets First A-10 Win, Beats #13 UMass 3-1

CINCINNATI - Xavier used three first half goals to earn its first Atlantic 10 victory of the season, a 3-1 win over #13 Massachusetts on Friday afternoon.

The win snaps a three-match losing streak for Xavier (2-9-1, 1-2-0 A-10) who had also been shutout in each of the previous four matches. The Minutemen, who are ranked No. 13 this week by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25, fell to 7-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in A-10 play.

XU opened the scoring just 1:27 into the game as senior Brandon Lalley fired a shot over the UMass goalkeeper's head from 10 yards out on the right side off a feed from freshman Toni Skudrzik.

Skudrzik would come back to net an unassisted goal of his own at the 16:02 mark when he punched in a rebound off a corner kick from the right side.

The Musketeers went ahead 3-0 before the half as Skudrzik used a feed from Lalley to punch in a goal from the seven yards out in the middle of the field at 40:43.

The visting Minutemen would attempt a comeback as freshman Todd Skelton played a ball in from the side, which rebounded out to classmate Rob Charest who finished to the left side of the net from seven yards out to cut the deficit to 3-1 at 60:50.

The Musketeer defense would clamp down for the remainder of the match and junior Brian Schaeper would earn the win after making two saves in goal for XU.

UMass goalkeeper and A-10 Player of the Week Colin Burns made seven saves while allowing three goals in a losing effort.

Xavier returns to action on Sunday against A-10 foe Rhode Island at 1 p.m. The game will be played at Anderson High School and directions can be found on the XU athletics webpage at www.xavier.edu.
