Oct. 9, 2012
CINCINNATI - The unbeaten Xavier men's soccer team reached another program milestone by breaking into the Top 10 in a major national poll. The Musketeers are ranked No. 9 in the latest Soccer America poll.
The Musketeers (9-0-2) jumped five spots from in the poll from a No. 14 rank last week. The only other Xavier men's program to earn a Top 10 ranking in a national poll was basketball. Xavier has been ranked in all eight polls this year by Soccer America.
The jump was possible after the Musketeers defeated Saint Louis - ranked 19th in last week's poll - and Butler in the opening weekend of Atlantic 10 Conference play.
Xavier is one of six Div. I programs without a loss this season and have an unbeaten streak of 11 matches going into its match against rival Dayton Friday. The streak is the longest in program history.
The Musketeers moved up to the No. 13 spot in the NSCAA national poll from No. 17 following their two victories last weekend. Xavier has been ranked in the Top 25 in the NSCAA poll for five-consecutive weeks.
Xavier's success on the pitch this season has been aided by the nation's No. 10 scoring offense and No. 30 defensive unit. The Musketeers lead the nation in total assists (32) and have scored 25 goals that ranks 12th in the country.
Senior forward Luke Spencer continues to top the individual offensive players list, ranking sixth in points per game (1.91) and total goals (9). Junior Matt Walker is tied for the lead in the conference with seven assists and ranks fifth nationally. Junior Gino De Paoli is tied for third in the league and 11th in the nation.
