Men's Soccer Falls To George Washington

CINCINNATI --- The Xavier men’s soccer team dropped its second Atlantic 10 match of the season Friday night at Corcoran Field. The Colonials won 3-2 on a field made sloppy by a steady rain.

Dan Limburg (Fort Wayne, Ind./Canterbury) put Xavier (2-7-1, 0-2) on the board first with a goal 32:38 into the game. Mike Kelley (Cincinnati/Glen Este) assisted the goal, the Limburg scored by blasting a shot to the right side that deflected off the back of a GW defender.

A penalty kick goal from Matt Osborne and a chip shot from Amar Johannsson within 30 seconds of each other gave GW (4-3, 1-1) a 2-1 advantage with eight minutes remaining in the first half. Robert Kirchner assisted the Johannsson goal.

Sam Fiore (Dayton, Ohio/Wayne) skimmed a shot along the ground off a Rob Bakker (The Netherlands) corner kick to even the match at two at 53:44 into the match.

Matt Pilkington beat Xavier keeper Brian Schaeper (Loveland, Ohio/Moeller) on a low shot to the right side off a pass from Justin Evans for the game-winner.

The goals for Limburg and Fiore were their first of the season. XU out-shot GW 14-12 and took five more corner kicks than the Colonials (7-2). Schaeper made four saves for Xavier.

The Musketeers will return to action on Sunday at a hopefully drier Corcoran Field against Richmond at 1 p.m.
