Having gone unbeaten for six of their last  seven matches, the Musketeers wrapped up their non-conference schedule with a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh Tuesday night (Oct. 1) at Ambrose Urbanic Field thanks to goals from freshman Jalen Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebuf Jesuit) and junior Garrett Halfhill (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown).

On the year, the Blue and White have netted 11 goals, allowing 11 scores with a 1.10 goals-against average. XU has been led offensively this season with three goals and five assists from senior Matt Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia). Junior Will Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) and Brow are second on the team with a pair of goals each. Between the pipes, XU has used a pair of keepers, with Eric Osswald (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty/USF) racking up 32 saves and three shutouts in eight nine and Vince Shaw (Versailles, Ky./Woodford County) tallying four saves in three of appearances.

The No. 4 Creighton squad is coming off a 1-0 loss to No. 22 Saint Louis at the Billikens’ Hermann Stadium on Oct. 2. Creighton outshot Saint Louis 13-8 in the match, but could not get on the scoreboard. The setback snapped the Jays’ program record of five consecutive double-overtime contests.

“Creighton is a perennial Final Four team and offers the best gameday venue in college soccer,” stated head coach Andy Fleming. “Add in them having the nation’s top rated RPI and this is a special opportunity ahead of us on Saturday. Our program was put on the map via big road wins against top rated teams and we always embrace the underdog role.”

After Saturday’s match at Creighton, the Musketeers will head to Chicago to take on DePaul (Oct. 9) in BIG EAST action.

With a win Saturday night, the Blue and White will secure the program’s first BIG EAST victory and BIG EAST road win.

After starting the season with a 0-3 record, the Musketeers have gone 4-1-2 in their last seven contests, including wins over Kentucky, UC Irvine, Pitt and crosstown rival Cincinnati. Over the last seven matches, XU has scored eight goals, while surrendering just four, and registered three shutouts.

The Musketeers have received plenty of preseason recognition from multiple outlets.
