Duquesne Edges Men's Soccer 3-2 in Pittsburgh
Xavier midfielder Chris Wolever scored his second and third goals of the season, but Duquesne tallied a pair of second half goals as the Dukes edged the Xavier University menís soccer team by a 3-2 count. With the loss, XU slips to 2-7-0 on the season while Duquesne improves to 5-4-0. The contest was the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both sides.
Wolever got the Musketeers on the board just 9:49 into the contest thanks to an assist from Matt Salzano. Duke striker Aaron Van Overschelde would knot the match up at one goal a piece with a score at 13:16. Wolever answered with his third goal of the season just five minutes later, giving XU a 2-1 edge it would take into intermission.
Travis Mackenzie restored parity at 62:01 and the game-winner was notched by Scott Gibson shortly thereafter at 69:35.
Ty Helmle stopped three shots in net for XU and he was relieved by Brian Schaeper with 21:50 to go. Schaeper stopped one shot and allowed a goal. Zach Varga made one save for the Dukes and collected the victory.
Xavier returns to action on Sunday, October 3 when the team takes on St. Bonaventure in New York. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
