Xavier Tops Missouri State In Close 1-0 Affair
The No. 23/16 ranked Xavier men's soccer team survived a tough test from Missouri State on Saturday and walked away with a 1-0 victory and first home shutout of the season. Junior Matt Walker was the difference in the win for the Musketeers who improve to 6-0-2 and tie the program record for longest unbeaten streak.

CINCINNATI – Riding a three-match unbeaten streak streak, the Xavier men’s soccer team will travel to Springfield, Mo. to take on the Bears of Missouri State on Saturday afternoon. The match is slated to start at 2:30 p.m.

Coming off of a successful home tournament, where the Bears went 2-0 and were named co-champions with Dayton. In the Baymont Inn and Suites Classic, three of the four goals scored by Missouri State were scored by headers off of set pieces. James Routledge had two of the assists and Matt Bray had the other. The goals were scored off of the heads of Brandon Besong, James Thomas, and Callen Roselieb. The 4th goal of the weekend was scored by Jack Roberts, and double-assisted by Brandon Besong and Jack Wood.

The Bears had four athletes named to the all-tournament team. Goalkeeper Trevor Spangenberg (only allowed 2 goals in 202 minutes this weekend), and the defensive line of Brandon Besong, Callen Roselieb, and Matt Bray were all recognized for the co-champions.

Xavier comes into Saturday’s match riding a three-match unbeated streak, after a rough 0-3 start to begin the season. On the yeah, the Blue and White have netted eight goals in six contests, allowing nine scores with a 1.50 goals-against average. XU has been led offensively early in the year with three goals and five assists from senior Matt Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia). Junior Will Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) is second on the team with a pair of goals and four points. Between the pipes, XU has used a pair of keepers, with Eric Osswald (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty/USF) racking up 15 saves in four games and Vince Shaw (Versailles, Ky./Woodford County) tallying a trio of saves in two appearances.

BIG EAST HONORS
Xavier senior midfielder Matt Walker was named BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week for his performances in XU’s two matches last week, the conference office announced on Monday, Sept. 19.

Walker registered a pair of goals to go with two assists as the Musketeers went 2-0 on the week, with wins over UC Irvine (2-0) and Kentucky (2-1). In the win over the Anteaters, who recently upset No. 16 Louisville, Walker tallied the game-winning goal and picked up an assist on the Blue and White’s second score of the match. Against UK on Saturday, Sept. 14, the senior scored the first goal of the game and also assisted on the game-winner.

HOME COOKIN’
Last season, Xavier outscored the opposition 31-8 with four shutouts and finished with a 9-0-1 record on their home pitch. Dating back to the 2011 season, the Musketeers have gone 16-2-3 over their last 21 home contests.
