Men's Soccer Shutout Streak Snapped by Bearcats

CINCINNATI – The Xavier men’s soccer team had its three-match winning streak snapped on Wednesday night by the University of Cincinnati. The Bearcats downed Xavier 3-1 at Corcoran Field in a match that also halted XU’s three-match shutout streak.

UC got on the board first with a goal from Wiremu Patrick just over 11 minutes into the match. Patrick was fed the ball from Tim Brown and drove it on the ground into the left side of the net.

The Bearcats maintained their 1-0 lead through the first half, and by halftime had out-shot Xavier 7-3.

Cincinnati added a second goal when Matt Hayden found the back of the net on close range on a pass from Justin Lewis in the 76th minute.

The Musketeers struck back with just over eight minutes remaining. On a corner kick, a Cincinnati player was called for a hand ball while on the goal line. Tiest Sondaal (Tilburg, The Netherlands) connected on the penalty kick to put Xavier back within a goal.

On the ensuing kickoff, Patrick played the ball back to Brown who immediately blasted the ball over the Xavier keeper and into the net for a goal.

Cincinnati took 13 shots in the match, compared to eight for the Musketeers.

Xavier sophomore goalkeeper Brian Schaeper (Loveland, Ohio/Moeller), the reigning Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week, had seven saves in the match.

Xavier’s three-match homestand will continue on Sunday at 2 p.m. with a game against Bowling Green.
