Men's Soccer Scores First Win
CINCINNATI --- The Xavier men’s soccer team scored the first goals of the season on Wednesday night, and in doing so picked up the first win of the 2003 campaign with a 3-1 victory over Detroit.
Freshman Matt Kmetz led the Musketeer effort, recording a goal and an assist in the match. The Titans (1-3-1) got on the board first in the 26th minute with a goal from Ablaye Camara. The Musketeers (1-6) responded just a minute and a half later when a pair of freshmen connected for the first Xavier goal of the season. As the Detroit keeper came out of the net, Kmetz controlled the ball and played it to classmate Toni Skudrzik in the center of the field. Skudrzik beat the retreating Titan goalie to the low left corner for the score. The score snapped XU’s school record six-match goalless streak. Xavier struck again just over three minutes into the second half. Senior Chuck Morgan played a ball from sideline. His effort hit the far post and bounced back across the goalmouth to Kmetz who punched it in. Senior Nick Thompson added an insurance goal on a breakaway with 6:45 remaining in the match. Xavier junior goalkeeper Brian Schaeper made six saves in the match. The Musketeers will hit the road to play at Valparaiso on Sunday. They will return to town next Wednesday to play at the University of Cincinnati. MEN’S SOCCER BOX SCORE Xavier 3, Detroit 1 GOALS: UDM – Camara (Lepore) 25:52.
