Xavier Earns First NCAA Win, Advances To Face Indiana
Senior Luke Spencer tallied a late goal and the No. 22 Xavier men's soccer team earned its first NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 victory over Kentucky on Thursday night at the UK Soccer Complex.

CINCINNATI – In a rematch of the 2012 NCAA Tournament first round matchup in Lexington, Ky. the Xavier men’s soccer team will host the Wildcats of Kentucky on Saturday. The match is slated to start at 7 p.m.

Kentucky is coming off a 4-0 win over IPFW on Sunday, setting a new program record for shots in a game (35). UK scored all four of their goals in the second half, marking the third-most goals in a half in school history. Sophomore Isak Krogstad led the way with his first two career goals, with UK also getting the first career goals from freshmen Charlie Reymann and Napo Matsoso.

Xavier comes into Saturday’s match fresh off a 2-0 win over UC Irvine on Tuesday night. On the season, the Blue and White have netted five goals in four contests, allowing seven scores with a 1.68 goals-against average. XU has been led offensively early in the year with two goals and three assists from senior Matt Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia). Junior Will Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia), sophomore Calum Latham (Springfield, Ohio/Central Catholic) and freshman Jalen Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebuf Jesuit) have each scored once. Between the pipes, XU has used a pair of keepers, with Eric Osswald (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty/USF) racking up seven saves in three games and Vince Shaw (Versailles, Ky./Woodford County) tallying a trio of saves in two appearances.

SCOUTING KENTUCKY
This season, Kentucky has been led by Krogstad, who has two goals and two assists from his midfield post. Senior Brad Doliner has a goal and an assist, with Matsoso and Reymann also adding goals. Freshman Sam Miller has two assist, with Jacob Scearce, Kaelon Fox and Bryan Celis each adding assists. In goal, sophomore Callum Irving has made two starts with shutouts, with senior Jack Van Arsdale starting one game with a goal allowed.

SERIES HISTORY
UK and Xavier have met 10 times all-time, with Kentucky leading the series 6-4-0. In games played in Cincinnati, UK is 4-0, with its last win coming in 2009 (1-0). In the last meeting between the two squads in 2012, the Wildcats faced the Musketeers in the first NCAA Tournament in Lexington. Senior Luke Spencer tallied a late goal in the 86th minute to give Xavier its first NCAA Tournament victory.

HOME COOKIN’
Last season, Xavier outscored the opposition 31-8 with four shutouts and finished with a 9-0-1 record on their home pitch. Dating back to the 2011 season, the Musketeers have gone 15-2-2 over their last 19 home contests.
