Spencer Named Atlantic 10 Player Of The Week
Sept. 4, 2012
CINCINNATI - Xavier's Luke Spencer has been named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week following his outstanding performance in two victories last week for the men's soccer team.
It is the third weekly award for the senior forward and the first time he was won the distinction out right. He was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for the first time in his career on Monday.
Spencer scored three times and added a game-winning assist in the Musketeers' victories over Wright State (Aug. 28) and Cincinnati (Sept. 2).
The local Cincinnati product earned his third-career two-goal game and helped Xavier beat Wright State after posting the game-tying marker with a nifty touch on a pass in front of the net. Minutes later he converted a penalty kick to give XU the come-from-behind victory.
Against Cincinnati, Spencer scored a goal in torrential rain to give the Musketeers the early advantage. Just after the intermission, he wrestled away a ball from a Cincinnati defender and found an open teammate for the game-winning tally, helping the Musketeers defeat the Bearcats for the first time since 2004.
He finished the week with 10 shots and a shot on-goal percentage of .700. He currently leads the A-10 in goals, goals per game, and points.
This is the first time Spencer has won the honor outright. He had shared his two previous weekly honors from the 2010 and 2011 season.
Also named an Atlantic 10 Player of the Week was sophomore midfielder Will Walker who earned the recognition from College Sports Madness. Walker scored the game-winning goal and had an assist in the win over Cincinnati on Sunday. It was his first goal and assist of the season.
Last season Walker earned a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team and was among the assist leaders in the conference.
The Musketeers return to action on Wednesday when they face IUPUI.
