MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Leading 3-2 late in the second half against Furman, the No. 22 Xavier men's soccer team surrendered a goal with 4:50 remaining in the second half and a tally 5:09 into the second overtime period to drop a 4-3 decision to the Paladins in the first game of the College of Charleston's Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. on Friday evening.

XU dropped to 0-1-0 on the young season, while Furman moved to 1-0-0 with the opening victory. Additionally, the Musketeers are now 2-4-3 in season openers over the last nine seasons.

The Blue and White struck first in the first half, when seniors Matt Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) and Tanner Petrick (Carrollton, Texas/Creekview/Tulsa) found redshirt junior Will Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) in the 14th minute, giving the Musketeers a 1-0 lead.

The Paladins responded in a big way scoring goals in the 36th and 41st minutes to grab a 2-1 advantage just before the end of the first half.

Twenty minutes into the second period, sophomore Calum Latham (Springfield, Ohio/Central Catholic) netted his first goal of the season to even the score (2-2). Lathum's goal came off a 1-2 combo with Matt Walker, where Latham beat the Furman goalkeeper Sven Lissek 1v1.

A goal by junior Garret Halfhill (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) at the 81:42 mark gave the Musketeers a 3-2 lead with just under nine minutes left in regulation. The Paladins answered three minutes later, when Evan De Ycaza one-touched a shot past XU's senior keeper Eric Osswald (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty/USF).

The teams maintained the 3-3 draw over the final three minutes of regulation, as the two squads wasted no time to embark on their first overtime contest of the year. Xavier played five overtime matches last season with all five ending in ties, while Furman went 2-1-3 in their six overtime games in 2012.

The Paladins took all six shots over the two extra periods, with Martin Ontiveros' golden goal accounting for the last strike in the game.

In addition to the 17-6 shot differential, the Paladins finished with a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Osswald was forced to make a trio of saves in his first appearance in net as a Musketeer, while Furman's Lissek recorded a pair of stops in the contest.

The Blue and While will wrap up play at the College of Charleston's Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. when they take on tournament host College of Charleston.  The Cougars, who turned in an 8-10-1 overall record (4-2-1 SoCon) last season, will compete in the Colonial Athletic Association for the first time in 2013. C of C finished third in the Southern Conference last fall before seeing their season end in the quarterfinals of the league tournament. Led by senior goalkeeper Kees Heemskerk (1.29 GAA, 74 saves, five shutouts), a preseason All-CAA honoree, the Cougars defeated UCF (Aug. 18) and East Tennessee State (Aug. 24) in their two exhibition contests.
