CINCINNATI. – No. 22 Xavier men’s soccer senior defender Nick Hagglund (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West HS), a CollegeSoccerNews.com Preseason All-American first team selection and Preseason All-BIG EAST honoree, was named to the initial 30-member list for the Senior CLASS Award, announced by the media outlet on Wednesday.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

One of three BIG EAST Conference representatives to appear on the list, the reliable and athletic center back earned the 2012 Atlantic 10 Defender of the Year last season. In addition to the Defensive Player of the Year honor, Hagglund was also an A-10 All-Conference first team pick, a 2012 NSCAA All-America second team selection, a 2012 College Soccer News All-America third team honoree and was named to the 2012 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.

In his three seasons on the pitch for Coach Andy Fleming and the Musketeers, Hagglund has been a fixture for Xavier. He's amassed 61 starts, 5,512 minutes played, four goals and eight assists. The Blue & White have recorded 20 shutouts with Hagglund as a member of the backline.

Highlighting his off the field character, the senior leader is involved with Athlete’s in Action (AIA) on Xavier’s campus. AIA is a campus ministry for athletes. Hagglund leads AIA meetings and is also a part of the AIA Spiritual Team Captains. In addition to being a volunteer leader for Young Life in the Greater Cincinnati Urban Division, a youth ministry organization that reaches out to high school adolescents, Hagglund is also an exceptional student, earning A10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll honors with a cumulative 3.596 grade-point average in business management.

Each of the 30 candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplify excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Men’s and Women’s College Cup® championships in December.

Landing two players on the BIG EAST preseason All-Conference team, the Blue and White were slated to finish fifth in the league. Entering their first year as a member of the BIG EAST, the Musketeers return 17 players from a team that finished the 2012 season with a 14-3-5 record, which included the program's first NCAA Tournament at-large bid, tourney victory and third-straight appearance into the 48-team field.

XU’s 2013 regular season begins at the College of Charleston Tournament (Charleston, S.C.), where the Musketeers will battle the Paladins of Furman on Aug. 30.
