CINCINNATI – Former Xavier men’s soccer standout Nick Hagglund was named the Soccer By Ives MLS Rookie of the Week on Monday.

The 10th overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, Hagglund has wasted no time making an impact on defense for Toronto FC. The centerback made his debut one month into the season, solidifying the backline in a 2-0 win against the Columbus Crew on April 5.

Last Saturday, Hagglund was in the starting lineup again as Toronto FC scored three points and clinched a series sweep against Columbus with a 3-2 win – in front of a large group of friends and family from his hometown of Cincinnati.

Overall, the 2014 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year has made 12 starts in 14 matches for Toronto FC, which is in strong playoff contention with the third-most points in the Eastern Conference (32) and a 9-7-5 record.
