CINCINNATI - Senior defender Nick Hagglund (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Lakota West HS) of the Xavier men's soccer team was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Preseason Best XI second team, the website announced on Tuesday (July 30).
Known as a reliable and athletic center back, the graduate of Lakota West and 2012 Atlantic 10 Defender of the Year, earned 2013 College Soccer News preseason All-America first team honors earlier this week. In addition to the Defensive Player of the Year honor last season, Hagglund, was also an A-10 All-Conference first team pick, a 2012 NSCAA All-America second team selection, a 2012 College Soccer News All-America third team honoree and was named to the 2012 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
In his three seasons on the pitch for Coach Andy Fleming and the Musketeers, Hagglund has been a fixture for Xavier. He's amassed 61 starts, 5,512 minutes played, four goals and eight assists. The Blue & White have recorded 20 shutouts with Hagglund as a member of the backline.
Hagglund, who was named one of the top 10 defenders in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer.com, is joined by one other BIG EAST standout with Creighton's Eric Miller making the second team backfield. Georgetown's Steve Neumann and Brandon Allen made first team, while Marquette's Axel Sjoberg and Bryan Ciesiulka made third team.
Hagglund, who earned XU's first NSCAA All-American award (Second Team) last season, helped lead the Musketeers to their best season in program history. He started all 22 matches for the Blue and White and registered two goals and four assists as Xavier finished the season with a 14-3-5 record, which included the program's first NCAA Tournament at-large bid, tourney victory and third-straight appearance into the 48-team field.
The No. 22 Musketeers kick off the 2013 season with a pair of exhibition matches. The first will be a home game against Belmont, which will be played at 7:00 p.m. on Aug. 18. The exhibition season will close on Aug. 23, as the Musketeers will travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana to take part in the Shindigz National Soccer Festival to play Loyola (IL). The home opener is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start on Sept. 7 against Big Ten foe Northwestern.
