CINCINNATI - Xavier men's soccer incoming freshman Jacob Smith was named a Top Ten Defender in the High School Class or 2013 by College Soccer News. Smith was ranked eighth on the list, the highest ranking by an incoming defender in the BIG EAST conference.

College Soccer News also rated Smith as the 39th overall prospect in the class of 2013. A native of Atlanta, Smith will join the Musketeers in August for the fall season and will vie for time on the backline with All-American Nick Hagglund.

"This is exciting and says a lot on a number of fronts," said head coach Andy Fleming. "First, we have evolved to where we are attracting some national level names to our program. Second, Jacob's natural position is attacker, which tells you about how athletic and versatile he is.

"Lastly, we have experience and depth returning such that we don't necessarily need to rely on him from day one and can bring him along at whatever pace is best. These are all feathers in our respective caps and highlight several strengths within our program."

The men's soccer team opens the 2013 schedule on Friday, August 30 against Furman in the College of Charleston Tournament. The first home contest for the Musketeers will be held on Saturday, September 7 when Northwestern visits the Xavier Soccer Complex.
