Men's Soccer Releases 2010 Schedule
April 27, 2010
"I am very excited to unveil our 2010 schedule to our players, families and our growing Xavier nation fan base. This is a challenging and balanced schedule that will test us and certainly put us in a position to achieve our goals as we continue to build our program.
"Our pre-season slate features the nation's premier Division I program in Indiana, a consistent NCAA tournament team in Oakland, and one of the most decorated Division III programs in Ohio Wesleyan. Each opponent will play a different system and provide a good measuring stick as to where we need to be heading into the regular season. Our players will also have the opportunity to play at one of college soccer's most storied venues in Yeagley Field at IU."
XU will take on Indiana, Ohio Wesleyan and Oakland in exhibition play and will take on the Hoosiers on Sunday, August 22 at 7 p.m. in Bloomington, Ind. IU advanced to the third round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Xavier's final two exhibition contests will take place at the XU Soccer Complex. The Musketeers will square-off against Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday, August 25 at 7 p.m. Ohio Wesleyan put together an 18-2-2 record last year and advanced to the Division III NCAA Tournament.
Xavier will round out exhibition play when the team welcomes Oakland to Cincinnati on Saturday, August 28 at 6 p.m. Oakland was 9-5-3 overall last season and sported a solid 5-1-1 mark in Summit League play. The Grizzlies defeated XU last year by a 3-1 count in exhibition play.
"I think the words that best describe the 2010 schedule are challenging, yet favorable. We have ten of seventeen matches at home, including our Dayton, Wright State and Cincinnati darbies. Five of the final seven matches will be played on Corcoran field at the XU Soccer Complex, including a stretch of five straight in mid October, which is often considered the most defining stretch in a college season."
"As far as the non-conference section of our fixtures go, we will see an emerging Evansville program, a good Marshall side and the nations rising star in Butler, while as always, the Atlantic 10 will be full of grind it out, parody-filled Friday-Sunday series."
The Musketeers' regular-season opener is set for Wednesday, September 1 at Marshall. The Thundering Herd went 10-7-2 during the 2009 season, including 6-2-0 in Conference USA play. XU defeated Marshall by a 2-0 score during the 2009 campaign.
Xavier's regular-season home opener is set for Saturday, September 4 against Butler. Game time is set for 7 p.m. against BU, which posted an impressive 14-3-2 overall record last season, including a 6-1-1 mark in Horizon League play. Butler advanced to the Horizon League Final and earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament.
XU will have a week off and will then welcome Wright State to the XU Soccer Complex on Saturday, September 11 at 7 p.m. The Raiders went 6-10-1 overall, 2-5-1 in the Horizon League in 2009.
The Musketeers will then travel to Evansville, Ind. to take on the Purple Aces on Friday, September 17. That match is set for 7 p.m. and Evansville was 12-8-1 overall last year, 5-4-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Xavier will then return home to take on Lipscomb on Friday, September 24 at 7 p.m. Lipscomb sported a 6-10-3 mark last year, including a 3-4-2 mark in Atlantic Sun action.
On Wednesday, September 29 XU will take on intracity rival Cincinnati in the annual Crosstown Shootout. That contest is set for 7 p.m. at the XU Soccer Complex. UC had an 8-10-0 record last season, including a 3-8-0 mark in the BIG EAST. The Musketeers final non-conference home game of the 2010 season is set for Saturday, October 2 when the team welcomes Alabama A&M to the Queen City for a 1 p.m. start. Alabama A&M was 4-12-1 last year.
XU will travel to Indianapolis for its final non-conference match where it will square-off against IUPUI on Tuesday, October 5 at 7 p.m. IUPUI went 5-11-3 overall last season.
Five of XU's nine Atlantic 10 matches will take place at the XU Soccer Complex including contests against Saint Joseph's (10/15), Temple (10/17), St. Bonaventure (10/22), Duquesne (10/24) and Dayton (10/30). The road slate will include Massachusetts (10/8), Rhode Island (10/10), La Salle (11/5) and Fordham (11/7).
The Musketeers will avoid playing the A-10's two NCAA Tournament participants, Charlotte and Saint Louis, during the 2010 regular season.
